Patient conquers Kilimanjaro

Nigel Varley - Kilamanjaro Sept 2018
Nigel at Mount Kilimanjaro Sumit

Last month fundraiser Nigel Varley took on a challenge of a life time and set out on the upward climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. He took the challenge alongside 40 other fundraisers, all raising money for charities close to their hearts. Nigel chose The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Nigel was patient at the ROH for over 18 years, and was treated for Clear Cell Chondrosarcoma, a very rare form of bone cancer. Nigel wanted to make a difference and thank The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for the care they provided and this seemed like the perfect opportunity

“The whole trek was an amazing experience, with the final leg on summit night something that I will never forget, in terms of the physical exhaustion, the freezing conditions, the altitude and the significant mental challenge in reaching the summit!”

Although the challenge was not easy, Nigel managed to climb all 19,341 feet of Mt. Kilimanjaro , and have fun whilst doing so.

Nigel is living proof that you can live a fruitful, exhilarating life whilst living with cancer.

“Amazingly, my illness is under control as the cancer has not grown for seven years.  Long may that continue….”

We’d like to express out thanks to Nigel, and everyone who donated to his fundraising venture. We are in awe of his commitment to such a challenging event, and smashing his fundraising target.

All £3,385.76 will go towards our yearly appeals, so that we can ensure more patients like Nigel have the best care and treatment.
