Date: 20th October 2026

Since launching the Thank You Card campaign, ROC have been overwhelmed by the kindness and appreciation shared by patients, families and visitors across The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

What began as a simple charitable initiative to give patients and loved ones the opportunity to thank those who made a difference during their hospital journey, has grown into a popular campaign that is helping to spread positivity throughout the Trust.

Funded by ROC, card distribution boxes have been placed across the hospital, including Main Outpatients, the Discharge Lounge, Children’s Services, MRI, Therapies and ADCU, making it easy for patients and families to share their gratitude with the individuals and teams who have cared for them.

The success of the campaign is not measured by the number of cards submitted. Instead, its true value lies in providing patients, families and loved ones with a simple, accessible and often anonymous way to recognise those who have had a positive impact on their healthcare experience.

For many people, time spent in hospital can be filled with uncertainty, anxiety and life-changing moments. These cards provide an opportunity to reflect on that experience and thank those who offered reassurance, compassion, expertise or simply a friendly face when it was needed most.

Whether it’s a volunteer helping someone navigate the hospital, a housekeeper brightening a difficult day, a healthcare assistant providing comfort, or a consultant delivering life-changing treatment, every card tells a story and provides recognition that may otherwise go unsaid.

Importantly, this is the type of initiative that would not ordinarily be funded through NHS budgets. Through charitable support, ROC has been able to invest in a project that places wellbeing, recognition and appreciation at its heart. While the financial investment was relatively small, the impact it has had across the Trust continues to grow.

The cards are not only meaningful for those writing them. They have become a powerful source of encouragement for staff and volunteers, helping to foster a culture of appreciation, positivity and motivation throughout the hospital. Many cards are displayed in staff rooms and departmental areas, allowing teams to celebrate the difference they make every day.

The messages themselves are often incredibly moving.

One family, whose wife and mother was urgently referred to the Trust following the discovery of a tumour in her leg, wrote:

“From literally the very first moment that we stepped into the Outpatient Department, we felt comforted and welcomed.

We were immediately greeted by Duncan, one of the exceptional volunteers at the ROH, who warmly introduced us to the hospital, ensured we knew where to go, and offered further assistance if needed.

My wife’s diagnosis, care, and subsequent surgery were under the remarkable Mr Etaiwi. Never before have we experienced such a professional, yet personable approach from a medical expert.

In the absence of words, we would like to make a monthly donation to the ROH, so that others may also prosper under the magnificent care of the hospital.

Thank you everyone at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.”

Another patient shared:

“I was always treated with care and compassion. They all looked after me as if I was their only patient. The hospital is beautifully clean. I will have no concerns about having to return for my full knee replacement. I would like to thank Mr Guebati for listening to me and doing the operation I so needed.”

One particularly heartfelt message recognised a member of the housekeeping team:

“Ann Marie has made Mommy’s stay so much more enjoyable with her friendly chats and caring nature. Our room has been kept spotless and nothing is too much trouble for her. Thank you so much. Love, Mommy and Emma.”

These heartfelt messages highlight the many different roles that contribute to a patient’s experience and demonstrate how exceptional care extends far beyond clinical treatment alone.

Staff Feedback

“How lovely to receive these messages of thanks. They have been printed and displayed in the staff room for all to see!”

“A little bit of gratitude goes a long long way”

“Thank you kindly for sharing, I have shared with ward 2 and its so lovely to see positive feedback. This has made me very proud.”

“I saw a thank you card displayed in the café and staff were so proud of it being received.”

Ruth Hughes, Fundraising Manager, said:

“Every card tells a unique story of compassion, kindness and excellence, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see those stories shared with the staff and volunteers who make them possible every day. This initiative shows how charitable funding can support the small things that make a big difference to both patients and staff.”

A member of the clinical team added:

“Receiving a thank you card can have a much bigger impact than people realise. Those small moments of gratitude can lift an entire team and reinforce the values that make The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital such a special place to care for patients.”
