Keeping the Adventure Alive: Adrian’s Hip Arthritis Journey
Date: 30th September 2026
After living with hip pain for more than five years, Adrian was determined to find a solution that would allow him to continue enjoying the active lifestyle he loved.
Following years of treatment closer to home in Derby, including steroid injections and careful monitoring, Adrian was referred to The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) in 2021. With a diagnosis of bilateral end-stage hip arthritis, he was seeking specialist care and access to a wider range of treatment options.
“I was referred to Birmingham ROH because they offered a wider range of hip treatment options.”
Initially, Adrian was referred for arthroscopy (a minimally invasive surgical procedure used by doctors to inspect, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint). However, by the time he arrived at ROH, the osteoarthritis in his right hip had progressed beyond that stage. After careful assessment and discussion with his clinical team, the decision was made to proceed with hip resurfacing surgery on his right side in 2022.
Before surgery, Adrian explored a range of conservative treatments at ROH, including physiotherapy and steroid injections to help manage pain and maintain mobility. While these treatments provided some relief, he was eager to find a long-term solution.
“It was challenging at times to keep waiting on the left side for a surgical direction. Whilst I understood this, it was difficult as my right hip had already progressed beyond arthroscopy before I was referred to ROH, and I was concerned the left would do the same.”
The decision to undergo resurfacing surgery proved life changing.
“It felt good to end the long-standing hip pain on the right side and get back to all the activities I love including walking, cycling, going to the gym and gardening.”
Reflecting on his experience at The ROH, Adrian speaks highly of the care he received throughout his treatment journey.
“Care was professional and efficient. As a hospital specialising in orthopaedics, I always felt in good hands.”
He particularly appreciated the speed and efficiency of the specialist service.
“There was little waiting when imaging or additional testing was required during appointments and waiting times for procedures were minimal once they had been decided upon.”
Adrian also felt empowered to play an active role in decisions about his own care.
“I advocated for myself and felt that my input was a part of the treatment decision-making process for the next step of treatment.”
One moment from his journey remains especially memorable.
“I remember the first words of my surgeon after resurfacing: ‘It was very stiff, it needed doing.’ I knew then I had made the right decision.”
Those reassuring words were quickly followed by a successful recovery, allowing Adrian to return to the activities that are such an important part of his life.
Grateful for the care he received, Adrian has chosen to give back by supporting Royal Orthopaedic Charity (ROC) through fundraising.
“The ROH has helped me keep my adventure alive, allowing me to continue with all the activities I enjoy.”
To support future patients, Adrian and a group of colleagues are taking on the Welsh 3000s Challenge from 2nd to 4th October. Often referred to as “The 14 Peaks”, the challenge involves summiting all of Snowdonia’s mountains over 3,000 feet. While the route itself is approximately 24 miles long, the additional walking required to reach the start point and descend from the finish can take the total distance to more than 30 miles.
The challenge is a fitting way for Adrian to celebrate the mobility and independence he has regained thanks to the treatment he received at ROH.
Through his fundraising efforts, Adrian hopes to support future patients facing similar journeys and encourage others not to give up on the activities they love.
“I would like to assist and inspire others to keep their adventure alive, maintain their independence and get back to all the activities they are passionate about.”
The funds raised through Adrian’s Welsh 3000s challenge will help ROC continue supporting patients, pioneering treatments and enhancing the experience of those receiving care at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, ensuring more people can return to living active, independent lives.
