Mr Michael Dubrowsky’s Legacy

In 2014, Mr Michael Dubrowsky, a former patient of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), made a transformative gift to ROC following his treatment for chondrosarcoma, a rare bone tumour. A successful chief engineer in the baking industry, Mr Dubrowsky led a quiet, unassuming life, yet his legacy has had an extraordinary impact. After his passing at the age of 55, he left a generous £1.5million legacy, funding the creation of the Dubrowsky Regenerative Medicine Laboratory.

This state-of-the-art facility continues to advance vital research in regenerative medicine and cancer therapies, ensuring that his legacy lives on in ground breaking medical discoveries.

Explore how Mr Dubrowsky’s £1.5 million legacy has been used to support ground breaking research and development at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

ChondrOx Study: Pioneering Research in Chondrosarcoma

The ChondrOx study investigates the biology of chondrosarcoma to develop new therapies for this rare bone tumour.

  • Dr Sally Flecture shared: “Replication stress is key to understanding how chondrosarcoma develops and becomes more aggressive.”
  • Research goals: To create accurate models of chondrosarcoma to test treatments and develop new therapies for patients.

Meet our Research Assistant: Mariella Gonsalves

The Laboratory Research Assistant, Mariella Gonsalves, contributes to advancing osteosarcoma research through her work in the Dubrowsky Laboratory.

  • Mariella’s role: From lab maintenance to designing experiments, Mariella is an essential part of the research team.
  • Mariella shared: “I am excited to be part of a team making a significant impact in osteosarcoma research.”

Meet our Dubrowsky Lab Manager: Dr Lucas Souza

Thanks to Mr Dubrowsky’s legacy, Dr Lucas Souza now leads the Dubrowsky Laboratory as its full-time manager, driving the next stage of development.

  • Dr Souza’s achievements: From managing the lab’s operations to securing funding for new projects.
  • Key research bids: Focusing on innovative therapies, lab infrastructure and rare sarcoma cell lines.

Operational Budget: Fueling Research Advancements

The operational funding from Mr Dubrowsky’s legacy has enhanced the lab’s capabilities and enabled the launch of vital research projects.

  • Lab upgrades: New equipment and consumables ensure the lab can continue cutting-edge research.
  • Ongoing projects: These include research on bone cancer therapies, spinal conditions and degenerative diseases.
