The Royal Orthopaedic Charity (ROC) is proud to be working alongside the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital to make a real difference for patients receiving oncology care. ROC’s mission is to refurbish five patient side rooms, creating spaces that feel warm, calming, and supportive — a real home-from-home for those staying during surgery or ongoing treatment.

Many patients spend weeks, sometimes months, on the ward. ROC aims to ensure their surroundings not only meet medical needs, but also boost comfort, dignity, and emotional wellbeing through the added extras the NHS are unable to fund.

This includes adding thoughtful touches such as calming artwork, adjustable lighting, and more comfortable furniture to make a challenging time a little easier.

Patients past and present are being invited to share their experiences through a short Patient Feedback Survey. All information gathered will guide the design process and ensure the project focuses on the features that truly matter.

Feedback will help create an environment that supports healing in both body and mind — leaving a lasting legacy for future patients.

Those wishing to donate directly to this appeal can contact ROC at roc@nhs.net or call 0121 685 4379.

Case Study: Nigel’s Story – Giving Hope Through the Oncology Appeal

Nigel was first diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in his right arm in February 2021. Under the care of Mr Scott Evans and the specialist team at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, he underwent two major surgeries—first to remove the sarcoma, and then, 18 months later, a full arm amputation.

Despite such life-changing treatment, Nigel refused to let cancer take away his passion for music. A lifelong guitarist and band member, he approached his amputation with remarkable resilience and humour. He taught himself to play the keyboard, proving once again his determination to face challenges head-on and continue doing what he loved.

Throughout his journey, Nigel received what his family describe as exemplary care. His wishes, comfort and dignity were prioritised at every stage, and although he had never felt at ease in hospitals, he consistently praised the kindness and compassion shown to him as an inpatient. He went on to meet and support others preparing for similar surgeries, offering encouragement, sharing his experience, and listening to theirs.

In July 2024, Nigel’s cancer sadly returned, and he passed away later that year. Before his death, he made one request: that any donations in his memory be directed to Mr Evans and his team, to help them continue their outstanding work.

His family were humbled when donations totalled over £2,500—a testament to the impact he had on others and the inspiration he continued to be.

Nigel’s family chose for these funds to support the Oncology Side Room Appeal, helping to renovate and enhance inpatient spaces for patients undergoing complex treatment. They describe it as a privilege to know that Nigel’s strength and courage will continue to bring comfort, dignity and hope to others facing their own cancer journey.

How can you help?!

  • £1,000 could provide comfort and dignity during recovery.

Your donation could fund a specialist recliner chair for a patient recovering from major cancer surgery. This chair offers vital support, helping patients sit safely and comfortably as they regain strength—making a difficult journey just a little easier.
  • £750 could help transform a patient’s recovery experience.

Your gift could fund a specialist skylight designed to provide calming, uplifting visuals for patients who must remain in a lay-flat position after complex spinal surgery. This simple addition can make a huge difference—reducing anxiety, improving comfort, and creating a more positive healing environment during a challenging time.
  • £500 could help create a calming, home-like environment.

Your gift could add mood lighting to patient rooms, transforming a clinical space into a warm, comforting sanctuary. This simple change can ease stress, lift spirits, and make recovery feel less daunting.
