Case Study: Nigel’s Story – Giving Hope Through the Oncology Appeal
Nigel was first diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in his right arm in February 2021. Under the care of Mr Scott Evans and the specialist team at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, he underwent two major surgeries—first to remove the sarcoma, and then, 18 months later, a full arm amputation.
Despite such life-changing treatment, Nigel refused to let cancer take away his passion for music. A lifelong guitarist and band member, he approached his amputation with remarkable resilience and humour. He taught himself to play the keyboard, proving once again his determination to face challenges head-on and continue doing what he loved.
Throughout his journey, Nigel received what his family describe as exemplary care. His wishes, comfort and dignity were prioritised at every stage, and although he had never felt at ease in hospitals, he consistently praised the kindness and compassion shown to him as an inpatient. He went on to meet and support others preparing for similar surgeries, offering encouragement, sharing his experience, and listening to theirs.
In July 2024, Nigel’s cancer sadly returned, and he passed away later that year. Before his death, he made one request: that any donations in his memory be directed to Mr Evans and his team, to help them continue their outstanding work.
His family were humbled when donations totalled over £2,500—a testament to the impact he had on others and the inspiration he continued to be.
Nigel’s family chose for these funds to support the Oncology Side Room Appeal, helping to renovate and enhance inpatient spaces for patients undergoing complex treatment. They describe it as a privilege to know that Nigel’s strength and courage will continue to bring comfort, dignity and hope to others facing their own cancer journey.
