ROC supports the award winning Jointcare programme at ROH

Royal Orthopaedic Charity (ROC) is proud to support The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital’s (ROH) innovative JointCare programme — a forward-thinking approach to hip and knee replacement surgery that is improving outcomes and patient experience.

What is JointCare?

JointCare is a wellness-focused programme that encourages patients to stay active before and after surgery. This approach helps speed up recovery, with many patients now going home same day as surgery or early the day after — a significant improvement on traditional recovery times.

The programme has enhanced recovery while maintaining excellent patient outcomes and experience.

How ROC Has Helped

ROC invests in projects that provide vital support beyond what NHS funding can cover. Key contributions to the ROH JointCare programme include:

  • Specialist Recliner Chairs

Specialist recliner chairs were funded by ROC to help patients complete physiotherapy exercises safely and comfortably. The chairs are fully reclining and are easy to operate ultimately to support patient recovery and provide extra comfort within therapy classes before discharge from hospital.

  • Therapy Room Mural

Understanding the importance of a positive environment for recovery, ROC funded a mural in the JointCare Wellness Room. Created by a local artist, the mural transforms the space into a bright, welcoming area that patients appreciate.

  • Meet ups post surgery

ROC supports regular ‘Coffee Catch-Up’ events where JointCare patients can meet with their care teams and fellow patients to share experiences and provide feedback. These informal sessions are valuable for continuous improvement and community building, with ROC funding room hire and refreshments for these bi-monthly meetings attended by up to 100 patients.

“Having a knee replacement has changed my life for the better.  I am walking and cycling pain free, and it is a joy to wake up each morning knowing that I no longer have physical restrictions”

One patient shared her experience of the JointCare pathway:

“35 years of netball had taken its toll on my knees. In 2012 I had arthroscopies on both knees which helped in the short term as well as a number of cortisone injections.

Over the years there has been a gradual deterioration causing intense pain and so in 2023 via my GP I asked for a referral to the ROH. The xrays showed severe osteoarthritis in both knees and surgery was recommended.  I was advised to exercise as much as possible whilst waiting for surgery and to continue losing weight. (Which I did, losing 4 stone in total).

My right knee was replaced in February this year, followed by outpatient physiotherapy. My inpatient care was exemplary from the medical/surgical teams to the physiotherapists and auxiliary staff. I also received wonderful outpatient care from ROCS and physiotherapy at College Green Medical centre after surgery.

The first few days following surgery were very painful but by the second week at home I was able to walk around pain free and without crutches.

Pre and post op exercises are ‘a must’ and I am convinced that my own self discipline in the area helped with my recovery. Fortunately I have my own exercise bike and I was using this daily from week 5.

The ROH has an excellent reputation and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Having a knee replacement has changed my life for the better.  I am walking and cycling pain free, and it is a joy to wake up each morning knowing that I no longer have physical restrictions.  I cannot fault any of the care that I received at the ROH as an inpatient and outpatient.

My consultant was Mr Manpreet SIDHU and I am eternally grateful to him and his team for the care and surgery that I received. I therefore made a donation to the Royal Orthopaedic Charity to show my appreciation to all of the staff for ‘everything’”

Royal Orthopaedic Charity is proud to contribute to the success of the JointCare programme by funding essential equipment, enhancing recovery spaces, and supporting patient engagement initiatives. ROC continues to work closely with ROH to help deliver world-class care and improved patient outcomes.

“The support of ROC has been pivotal to the JointCare pathway, and their ongoing support allows us to run our coffee catch up events which are so beneficial for staff and patients, both present and future!” Alicia Stanton – Clinical Service Improvement Lead
