“35 years of netball had taken its toll on my knees. In 2012 I had arthroscopies on both knees which helped in the short term as well as a number of cortisone injections.
Over the years there has been a gradual deterioration causing intense pain and so in 2023 via my GP I asked for a referral to the ROH. The xrays showed severe osteoarthritis in both knees and surgery was recommended. I was advised to exercise as much as possible whilst waiting for surgery and to continue losing weight. (Which I did, losing 4 stone in total).
My right knee was replaced in February this year, followed by outpatient physiotherapy. My inpatient care was exemplary from the medical/surgical teams to the physiotherapists and auxiliary staff. I also received wonderful outpatient care from ROCS and physiotherapy at College Green Medical centre after surgery.
The first few days following surgery were very painful but by the second week at home I was able to walk around pain free and without crutches.
Pre and post op exercises are ‘a must’ and I am convinced that my own self discipline in the area helped with my recovery. Fortunately I have my own exercise bike and I was using this daily from week 5.
The ROH has an excellent reputation and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Having a knee replacement has changed my life for the better. I am walking and cycling pain free, and it is a joy to wake up each morning knowing that I no longer have physical restrictions. I cannot fault any of the care that I received at the ROH as an inpatient and outpatient.
My consultant was Mr Manpreet SIDHU and I am eternally grateful to him and his team for the care and surgery that I received. I therefore made a donation to the Royal Orthopaedic Charity to show my appreciation to all of the staff for ‘everything’”
